“It is better to be looked
over than overlooked.” -Mae West
God instructed Samuel to go to
Jesse’s home to pick out the next king of Israel. When Samuel arrived at
Jesse’s home, Jesse showcased seven of his sons, but excluded his youngest, David. It’s probable that when Jesse knew that
Samuel wanted to pick a king from his family, he overlooked David because he
didn’t think David looked the part of royalty. (David’s brothers were strapping
soldiers, but David was a scrawny shepherd-boy.) However, Samuel asked, “Do you have any more sons?” Jesse called on David, and we can only imagine what David's thoughts were once he realized why Samuel was there. Probably something like, "Wow. Seriously, Dad?!" Samuel sensed the favor of God on David's life and anointed him to be the next king of Israel. The
lesson for David is also true for you and me, too: Even when people overlook
you or doubt you, just remember that God still has a plan for you. We're going
to have people in our lives that don’t see in us what God sees. However, we don’t need everybody else’s
approval when we have the approval and favor of the Most High God.
I have
placed before you an open door that no one can shut
(Revelation 3:8, NIV).
