“Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly, devils
fall because of their gravity.” -
C.K. Chesterton
Abraham’s wife, Sarah was 89 years old and barren. Not being able to have a child when one
wants to would be very hard for most any woman, so imagine Sarah’s many years
of tears. God revealed to Abraham
that she’d have a child, but Sarah’s initial reaction was to scoff, “Yeah
right! I’m too old.” One year later God gave her baby Isaac, and all she could
do was laugh, saying, “God has made laughter for me; everyone
who hears will laugh with me." (Gen. 21:6). Sarah learned to look at the events taking place in her life,
in proportion to God’s greater plan, and laugh at herself. Someone old enough to be a great grandma
just had her first baby! God really
does have a sense of humor.
Similarly, we must weigh the negative events transpiring in our lives in
proportion to God’s greater plan. You
might not feel this way right now, but perhaps eventually you will look back
and laugh, saying, “So that’s what God was doing! That’s funny.”
“God has made laughter for me; everyone
who hears will laugh with me." (Gen. 21:6, ESV).
