Sympathy vs. Empathy

I've got to admit it's getting better. It's a little better all the time.” -Paul McCartney

Often times we may meet people that are facing trials that we’ve never experienced, and then there isn’t much we can say, but, “I’m sorry, I hope you feel better.”  Those words may feel empty as you speak them, because although you sympathize with them, you don’t also empathize with them.   How can you if you’ve never gone through what they’re going through?  Sometimes you may go through trials, but the silver lining is that in the end God will use you to say to someone, “I’m sorry, but trust me, things do get better.”

God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted (Matthew 5:4, NLT).
